Ensley Willow is based in
Northeastern Ohio, and uses carefully selected willow to make a wide variety of
unique, comfortable, beautiful and environmentally friendly furniture for the
garden and the home. The shapes into
which willow furniture can be made are almost endless, and each artisan has his
or her own style, based on what they deem to be most comfortable, durable, and
appealing.
Willow furniture was a familiar
sight on porches across the country in the 1920's and
30's, during
which time bands of Gypsies migrating North in the summer, and South in
the
winter, would gather willow down by the creeks, make the furniture,
and sell it along their way.
In addition to being sturdy, comfortable, unique, and
attractive, willow furniture is eco-friendly, as willow artisans use green
building materials and construction methods. Willow grows year round, and
when it’s harvested, new shoots grow from the stump. The willow will continue to grow year after
year and the roots are extraordinarily tough and tenacious. Most willows take root readily from cuttings
or where broken branches lie on the ground, and the buds are lateral, thus no
truly terminal bud ever forms.
